1. Introduction to U.S. Economic Production

Every country in the world produces some combination of goods and services, though the range of what each country produces—as well as countries' particular specializations—can vary quite widely. In this module, we examine the economic ouptut of the the United States, which has a large and diverse economy that creates products and services across a spectrum of different industries.

Although we often focus on the top-level output of countries—as measured by their GDP—this single number can conceal substantial geographic differences in regional and even sub-regional economies.

The following two sections explore these patterns in more detail for the United States, beginning first with an overview of U.S. output at the national level and then diving deeper with a view into data at the state level.
